This paper discusses the crucial role played by secretaries of education in the framework of educational decentralization in Colombia. It highlights the importance of these leaders for the effective implementation of educational policies and the administrative assurance of the educational service at the local level. In addition, it examines the desirable characteristics that secretaries of education should have according to the specialized literature. The analysis is based on data compiled by the Entrepreneurs for Education Foundation, including information on gender, training and experience of the 96 secretaries of education in Colombia in 2020, obtained through public sources such as the Public Employment Information and Management System (Sigep) of the Administrative Department of the Civil Service.
